Female characters in Swamp Dwellers:

Probably to me the greatest singer, female voice, is Billie Holiday. And one of the most moving for me, I don't know why - maybe it's nostalgia, maybe because my life is one of constant partying, whatever.
- Wole Soyinka (Brainy Quote)

Wole Soyinka is the first African writer who is awarded with Nobel Prize in 1986. He is basically Nigerian play writer and poet. Soyinka was basically born into Yoruba community and here also he try to depict the norms and regulations of his community. In this play he focuses on the problems of the youth of his time. Even today and during his time we can see the influence of the first world countries on the third world countries. He tries to bring those issues in his writing. The young people wanted to leave the village and the community and wanted start a ‘New’ life in the city. His one of the notable work is ‘Swamp Dwellers’, in which he discuss this issue at length.

Even the title of this play is very significant one. And as Derrida use to say that each and every word has free play of the words. Here also we will find the different free play of the words or particularly the word ‘Swamp’. Swamp means where nothing can grow. Here ‘Nothing can grow’ is also connected with the mental states, means new ideas. This shows the disturbed and fragmented mind set of the youth. The second meaning of the word swamp means the ‘City’. Where once someone goes never comes back. Swamp is a kind of muddy place where we cannot create a particular impression of a thing. Here Soyinka tries to give negative connotation to the word ‘City’.

We can compare this play with T.S.Eliot’s ‘The Waste Land’ where nothing grows and which also tries to depict the disturbed and fragmented psyche of the youth. At some extend this play is also absurd play like ‘Waiting for Godot’ and ‘The Birthday Party’ because as audience we are not provided the full information of the past of the characters. What next happened to the characters is also not much clear in the play. Throughout the play we can see the struggle between the tradition and the modernity because village and city these both are the opposite pillars and each represents one. But apart from this we can also see many other conflicts like the generation gap, fragmented mind set, and the suppression of the female in the male dominated world. Black are always considered as the inferior to the white people. Soyinka himself face many problems while writing and that is why it is said that when a black is writing he will never bring the change into the society rather he will try to change the mind set of colonizers with aggressive mood.

When black are writing their voice becomes the voice from the margin and white people are at the centre. And here also if we apply the theory of Derrida then we have to change the margin and periphery. White people at periphery and black people at margin. The same way women at the centre and the men at periphery.
Makuri says “There wasn’t a woman anywhere more faithful than you.”
Alu: “I never had a moment of worry in the whole of my life.”
These are some lines taken from the play ‘Swamp Dwellers’. Alu and Makuri are the husband and wife and they have twin sons named Igwezu and Awuchike. Apart from there is also another important character named as Desala. She is the wife of Igwezu. As above mentioned that this play is much like ‘Waiting for Godot’ and ‘The Birthday Party’ and that is why the past of the characters are not much clear in front of us. We come to know only as the play moves forward.

Alu:
Alu is the wife of Makuri. She is the mother of Igwezu and Awuchike. She is aged about sixty. She believes in the custom of the swamps. (Sites) . If we study the character of Alu then we come to know that she is the suppressed woman by his own husband. His husband Makuri always tries to feel inferior to Alu. Alu is like other female characters ordinary woman who lost her one child in the swamp means in the city and now she don’t want to lose his other child in the city. She always tries to fulfil every wishes of his husband as well as his sons. Sometime she also fight against her husband for his sons. So here we can compare the character of Alu with Mrs Ramsay in ‘To the Lighthouse’. She is faithful to her husband and to her duty. And that is how she emerges as the perfect woman in front of reader’s eye.
As already said that the one of the main theme of the play is the conflict between the tradition and the modernity. The play writer has depicted this conflict through the characters also because here Alu stands for the traditional mode of the time. She is against the current changes of the society. Because she was not in favour to send his sons to the city. We can say that she was denying may be because of her motherly love towards her sons.

Throughout the play Awuchike never comes on the stage but he remain present through the talk of the family. Alu use to remember him a lot. Because when he went there, in the city he was the different person and now he is the different person. From the talk of the Igwezu we can assume that he is now the successful person there and not intended to come back to his village. But as above mentioned that we can’t say anything about any character of the play.
Igwezu: “Awuchike is dead to you and to this house. Let us not raise his ghost in this house.”
Whenever his mother used to remember Awuchike, Igwezu used to speak this lines. From this lines we can also see the rivalry between this twin brothers. There are glimpse of everything not a single thing is clearly said by the writer. This lines also suggests the success of Awuchike over there in the city.

Desala:

Throughout the play she never appears on the stage like Awuchike. She married to Igwezu and went with him to the city but unlike him she never return to the village. This again indicated the modernity. As I above mentioned that play writer showed the modernity and traditional way of living the life through the characters also. Here Desala stands for the modern way of living the life. Again from the given fragmented information we can assume that Desala went there with Igwezu but there she married to Awuchike. May be because he is more successful than Igwezu there. Or there are other possibilities like Igwezu leaves all alone there in the city. The things are not much clear. But the chances of her marrying to Awuchike is more because whenever Alu heard about this she is not ready to accept the reality that Awuchike kicked his own brother. At some extent Desala becomes the reason for the rivalry between both the brothers.

But on the other hand we also can’t blame Desala because as a young girl when she married to Igwezu she also must be having some young dreams for her life and when she tried to fulfil all her dreams she is also not wrong. When Kadiye asks Igwezu about his wife Desala he becomes a bit angry upon Kadiye which shows that now he doesn’t care about Desala. From this point we come to know about Desala and Igwezu that may be something went wrong between this husband and wife.
The story is not unfolding ordinary in front of our eyes. The things are also not much clear about anything and which also shows the mental state of the characters. And because the things are not much clear in front of our eyes we have to relay much on the language used by the play writer. It is said that whenever from the margin, from the periphery the voice comes it is always harsh and aggressive here also the voice of Alu and Desala is much harsh and aggressive but unheard by the society.

Conclusion:

We can say that Soyinka is the bitter critic of his own time and culture. He depicted his culture as it is. He also present the negative side of his culture. Directly or indirectly through the character of Desala we compare the twin brothers that who is powerful?

And the relationship between Makuri and Alu is also broken one. Which also shows that females are the victim in the marriage system. Sometimes it also happened that Alu becomes so aggressive when Alu says that ‘Catch me if you can’ which again shows the power of the females. Alu emerges as both the way strong enough as well as weak enough that she don’t want to lose his second child. And Desala also emerges as both the way modern enough and independent enough to take her own decisions. And here we can say that no one can help each-other because at different level each characters are victim, and one victim can’t help the other victim.

Assignment Topic: Character Study of Hermione in ‘Harry Potter’

Character study of Hermione in ‘Harry Potter’:

‘Young girls are told you have to be delicate princess. Hermione taught them that you can be the warrior’
-        Emma Watson (Granger)

This is the quote by Emma Watson who played the role of Hermione Granger in the films ‘Harry Potter’ and the series. ‘Harry Potter’ is fantasy series written by J.K.Rowling. Rowling herself lived the life ‘rags to riches’ and that is why we can see this influence on her book ‘Harry potter’. J.K.Rowling said for the character of Hermione.

"...none of the characters in the books are directly taken from life. Real people did inspire a few of them, but of course once they are on the page they become something completely different. But, yeah, Hermione is a caricature of what I was when I was eleven — a real exaggeration, I wasn't that clever — Hermione is a borderline genius at points — and I hope I wasn't that annoying...sometimes she is an incredible know-it-all." (Wikia)

This book also falls under the category of Children Literature. In very simple words, Children Literature means where the hero is a child and he fought against the evils as a child. It also includes fantasy, imagination and that is why we can say that children literature is also Speculative Literature. Here also we will see some magic and the basic theme of love and death and good winning over evil. It is true that ‘Harry potter’ falls under the category of Children Literature but with this, this story also provide us the psychological depth of the life very creatively. Direct way or indirect way the female characters are at the centre, be it Hermione, Lily any other professor at Hogwarts school. Their role are also important as a professor, as a student, as a friend or as a mother. Here I have tried to explore the character of Hermione.

Hermione is described as having bushy brown hair and brown eyes. Hermione's name is taken from William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale, when I searched for the meaning of Hermione’s name in the result I got this:

The name itself is indicating that how powerful she must be. It also says that this is Greek baby name. Well if we notice the other meaning of the name then we will find which means well born, stone. The name is powerful but at some extend it also gives us some negative connotation to it.

Harry, Ron and Hermione these are the important characters of the book ‘Harry Potter’. Hermione is one of the important characters of the book and later turned into movies also. Though the hero of the book is Harry himself. They three are the best friends at the Hogwarts School. They three were belonging from Gryffindor house. Gryffindor values courage, bravery, nerve, and chivalry. Its mascot is the lion, and its colours are scarlet and gold. Sorting Hat sings a song, each student in turn is seated upon the stool in front of the rest of the student body. The Hat is placed on the student's head, where upon it examines his or her mind and assigns them to one of the four Houses based on abilities, personality, and preferences. Hermione got the seat in that house because of her ability and personality.

The admission process at Hogwarts is something like this. According to the novels, admission to Hogwarts is selective, in that children who show magical ability will automatically gain a place. Letters to Muggle-born witches and wizards, who may not be aware of their powers and are unfamiliar with the concealed wizarding world, are delivered in person by a member of Hogwarts staff, who then explains to the parents or guardians about magical society, and reassures them regarding this news. Here the reference of Muggle blood come which means Muggle-born is the term applied to wizards and witches who come from non-magical families.

According to Rowling, the average Hogwarts annual intake for Muggle-borns is 25%. Supremacists typically believe Muggle-borns to be magically deficient, despite examples to the contrary, such as Hermione Granger and Lily Evans, who are exceptionally skilled in their abilities. Hermione was also coming from the non-magical background like Lily Evans, mother of Harry Potter. Hermione’s parents were dentists at London. She was not knowing about her magical power and raised as a normal girl but when she was 11 years old she come to know that she is a witch and taken at Hogwarts School. She is portrayed in the as well as in the movies as the beautiful girl.

She is very much interested in her studies that she always likes to read the books at library.
Harry Potter: "But why's she got to go to the library?"
Ronald Weasley: "Because that's what Hermione does. When in doubt, go to the library." (Wikia)
Whenever she had a doubt she always visits the library. Not only when she is in doubt but also to help Harry and Ron she visits the library and helps her friends. She is portrayed as beautiful, simple but studious among all the other characters. Though Harry is the hero but Hermione is more intelligent and powerful at the spell of magic as compared to both these boys.

If we search for the meaning of the word ‘Witch’ then in result we will find something like this:’ a woman thought to have evil magic powers, popularly depicted as wearing a black cloak and pointed hat, and flying on a broomstick.’ This is the typical image of witch in our mind. We also find different meaning of the word like she-devil, hag, crone, harpy etc. which gives negative connotation to the word but here Rowling has created a character like Hermione, and through this character she tried to give positive impact of the word ‘Witch’ in our mind as a reader.

Hermione enjoyed her years as a pupil at Hogwarts, and took assignments, classes, and school rules very seriously. She was often described as "the brightest witch of her age". Her favourite subject was initially Charms, and later Arithmancy, and the only areas of study that gave her trouble were Flying and Divination.

It is true that she coming from the non-magical family background but all the she is abused and tortured as ‘Muggle-blood’. Whenever the time comes she is always there to help her friends Harry and Ron. Whether to solve a riddle or to solve a puzzle or to help Harry in destroying the Horcruxes. Sometimes she also never even care for her life also. Her observation is also more powerful than Harry and Ron. We come to know about her this ability when they three face the dog for the first time in first part of the movie. She was the first one among three of them that the dog is protecting something and he is standing on the door. She was not the best friend of Harry and Ron until she was saved by troll’s attack by both of them and remain the best friend of both of them.

Here we also have to think about the other part that though she is emerging as the strong character among our eyes as the reader but she is not ‘The Hero’ of the novel. We always will put her after Harry Potter. The other thing is that Dumbledore he gave a book to Hermione and the tools to Harry and Ron which again shows the typical portrayal of a girl. Well, second interpretation we can also do that only she is enough intelligent to read the book. And his faith in Hermione is also true. The second thing is that in the last part of the movies it is showed that she is carrying a purse a magical purse in which everything she needs come out. Which again carry on the idea that in a girl’s purse we will find everything - the typical idea.

It is true that she is brilliant among all but she yet not got enough space like the other female characters and especially like Lily potter. She was also strong and stronger than Harry’s father and it her love which was creating armour around Harry and was protecting Harry till the end.

Conclusion:

It is true that Hermione is emerging as strong character but she is not the lead character of the story. The second thing is that she is always targeted for her weakness she is never appreciated for her strength, Even, Ron also admits that without Hermione they were not able to survive for a day but even then he is not appreciating her face to face. And the other limitation is that like other characters here Hermione is also objectified but in more controlled way. At some extend she becomes the reason of the rivalry between both the friends. But the good thing is that she is not weak point of the story rather she is the strong bond of the story. She is very logical in her way of thinking. But still all the time she is being abused by remembering her that she is Muggle-blood. It is true that she is smart among three of them but she is always pointed about her weakness rather than her ability and positivity.

Assignment Topic: Representation of Women in Advertisements

Representation of ‘Women’ in Advertisement:

We all know that in 21st century advertisement field is emerging as the prominent market. If any company or any brand wants to sell their products then they will definitely advertise their products. And in the 21st century advertisement is also one of the important sector. We are living in that era that we can’t think without advertisement. During our day to day life we can feel that we are surrounded by advertisement everywhere.

So first, let’s see in brief about the meaning of advertisement. When we search in google about advertisement at that in result we will find like this:

In short, we can say that advertisements means to recommend something, a brand or service or products etc. through public sectors. Now a day advertisement has become one of the important right of customers because through advertisements as a customer we come to know more about the product. There are different kinds of advertisements like broadcast, print advertisement etc. With the changing time the advertisement are also becoming more and more creative. Now a day the advertisement are merely not for the information but it also serves the customers’ purpose of entertainment. So we can say that the advertisements are now infotainment.

Information + Entertainment = Infotainment

With this ‘Target Audience’ is also important. And according to Target Audience the advertisements are becoming more and more creative. We have to see how children, women, men are depicted in the advertisements. Here at length I will talk about ‘How Women are presented in the Advertisements.’ We know that a coin have two side the same way the women are presented in the advertisements. Some are the positive effects whereas some are the negative effects.

It is said that ‘Literature is the Mirror of the Society’ now a day the rhymes are used for advertisement like this that ‘Advertisements are the Mirror of the Society.’ As I already said that advertisement sector is emerging as one of the prominent market. It captures each and every movements of the society, faster than any other sectors like cinema, literature etc. And to study society advertisements should be at centre. And it affects more than any other medium. For example the advertisements of Amul products are more effective and pleasurable because it not only gives us the information of its products but it also captures the political movements as well as social movements in it.

Portrayal of Women in Advertisements:

Whenever we think of a woman in advertising a picture of beautiful lady will emerges in our mind. It itself says that how the women are portrayed in the ads. They are used as an object rather than a living human being. Sometimes their entry and exit are also useless because even if they are not needed still even they are shown in the ads. Sometimes the women in the ads are bitterly critics for their clothes and physical appearance. Their thinking ability are questioned and they are shown as the ‘Showcase’ with the man.

Positive Side:

Here above very briefly I talked about the portrayal of the women in the ads but it doesn’t mean that there are always only negative influences only. Some positive influences are also there like with the changing time they are portrayed as more independent and free thinkers and carrier oriented. Here I would like to give the example of ‘Fair & Lovely’ ad. In this ad the girl is trying to convince her dad that first she wants to do her job, she wants her own house and then she will think about her marriage. The other positive side which I found in the ads is that the girls are portrayed as ever ready and can do anything. Like in the ads of ‘Sunsilk’. The girl is T.V reporter, the bot is sarcastically saying that now the girl arrive and will take lots of time for preparing herself, or rather we can say that beautifying herself. The girl arrives and says that I am all ready. This not only surprise the boy but also the entire team. It clearly shows that the girls are not an object and the second thing is that they also can do the tough job like journalism which needs more field work. If we talk about other ads like ‘Fastrack’ then these ads are also quite creative in its way. They always gives equal weightage to women. Because the girls in the ads are depicted as the important characters. Then the ads about ‘Scooty’ it shows that the not only the boys but the girls are also equally important in a college campus. And even the tagline of the ‘Pleasure Scooty’ is like this ‘Why should always boys have all the fun?’

The women are always depicted as the inferior to men in the physical strength, so this myth is also falsify in the ad of ‘Nirma’. An ambulance was stuck in the mud. Four women in the clean outfits comes forward and help the ambulance to come out from the mud. Whereas the rest of the people there were watching the ambulance. Which clearly shows the women empowerment. It also shows that the women are becoming more and more aware about their role in the society. If we talk about another ads like any beauty products then it also shows that the women are now more aware about their beauty. They are beautifying themselves not for other but their self.

Negative Side:

Though there are this many positive influence but there are many negative influences like the body of the woman is objectified openly. Sometimes the role of the women is stereotyped. The body of the woman is served to attract particular mass. ‘Scopophilic’ is a term to describe this kind of desires. This representation of female body in advertisement is stereotyped. It is because women are always shown as if they are subordinate, subjugate, inferior, weak, dominated, dependent, demure and more importantly as pleasing objects. On the other hand, male decide their self-worth. Every time females are objects. (Pokharel)

When the ads are made they try to gain a kind of faith in the products from the audiences, but sometime they portray the women for male gaze only. It will focus more on the female’s body rather than the product. One deceitful and convincing aspect in advertising is the use of today’s technology of Photoshop. Photoshop is a crucial part of the media and helps sell a woman’s body even more. These photo-shopped advertisements of the perfect body and look on a woman affect the lives of everyday people. Girls tend to learn from an early age what the ideal female beauty is depicted as, which in return can lead to obsessions and health problems, such as anorexia and bulimia. (Sharma)

Again here I would like to give example of all the fairness creams. Because these ads try to create an image of the female face as well as female body. Through the photo-shop they creates the image in which the female is having wrinkleless skin, spotless face, face having no dark circles at all, and flawless and glowing skin. Which is not possible in the real life. In one the ‘Fair & Lovely’ ad it was shown that because of her ugly look the girl was not able to find the job and suddenly she saw the ad about fair & lovely, she apply it on her skin. Now she is having the white skin and she was selected because of her look rather than her intellectual. Sometime the girls are depicted as the dumb kind of fellow who doesn’t know much about their self. Here I would like to give example of deodorants.

A man apply the deodorants and suddenly the angles (female only) starts falling from the sky just because of the fragrance. If we talk about the cosmetic products then there also the women are presented as an object only.

There are many apples conveyed by the different ads. When the women are presented in the ads then that ad becomes more sex applying than any other. It sometimes also provide the emotional apple. But in ads generally the role of the mother is portrayed as the barrier in the carrier of the children. For example if the boy wants to go somewhere for the job or studies the mother will deny to let him go. Here again the women are not presented in good connotation rather they are depicted as the too much emotional and dumb about the changing time requirements. Sometimes their role is within the four wall only. Sometimes they are shown in the ads just for ‘Showcasing’ the ad.

Conclusion:

Representations of women in the media have become a serious problem in today’s world. As we become a more technology-advanced society, women become more falsely advertised, dehumanized, and hyper sexualized. “Advertising is one powerful force that keeps us trapped in very rigid roles and in very crippling definitions of femininity and masculinity.” (Sharma)

Indlish: The role of English in India

Indlish: The role of English in India

Introduction:

After the independence of India in 1947, with new symbols, pride, values and power there was a force to make Hindi language as official language. But looking at the multi characteristic The Indian Constitution did not speak of the national language of the Union. India has multi cultures and Indian can’t believe in oneness rather it believes in openness. After so many debates it was decided that Hindi will become the official language for Hindustanis. But even after fifteen years in 1950 English remain as one of the dominant languages. As the time passes constitution make a decision that English will be the work language in the processor of government forms.

Indlish: The role of English in India

So slowly but staidly like this English language emerged. Then soon after English language was take place in primary, secondary education. And now the English medium schools are also available. Because Indian people are native people of English, we can the face of English: Satan and Saraswati. English as Saraswati because now some Indian people are capable enough to talk in English and learn the English language, by knowing this language they in those elite groups who have the power. (E.) The Satan face of English language is that it was unknown to larger people in the India. But as the time passes it had become more and more Indian language with Indian grammar and this happened because it was used by the large number of Indians, education system, commerce and journalism. It became fit for cultural expression also as the Indian journalists and creative writers in English demonstrated. Today, India one of the stronger nations in the world and we all know that English is the world language. So communicate with other countries we need the English language and that is the fact. India has already started growing as the learned country of English language. We have very good cultural heritage, but up till now the world was not aware about this. It came to the world through English language. Yoga is basically from India and now known to the world which is the recent example. (Chinku)

The other fact of English language is that those who don’t know English for world they are actually not exist in the world. For example those who choose Indian languages as their study medium they are automatically become the small minority and are poor students scholastically and economically, because now days the English language is the dominant language in the world as well as in India. The products of the colleges and universities, being educated through English, found it convenient to do their work through the same language, whether it is administration, professions or business management. It is true that the intention of the British rulers to introduce the English language was different. They wanted the people who can help them. The other thing remains here is that all the people wanted to know English language.

The other aspect of the English language is that in India English language is taught as the second language. The term ‘second language’ is understood in two different ways-1) English is second language after one or more Indian languages, which are primary and more significantly, 2) in school education, the second language is what is introduced after the primary stage and has a pedagogical as well as a functional definition, particularly in the context of the ‘the languages formula’. As above said that India has the multi characteristic that’s why Indian people at least know two to three languages.  The interest of the British to teach the English language is dead now. Now the role of English is like this:

  • English is the language of knowledge (science and technology),
  • English is the language of liberal, modern thinking;
  • English is our window on the world;
  • English is the library language;
  • English is the lingua-franca. (Kapil )

English has opened up many new aspect to us also and the world also, because English has become world language and through which we can communicate to the world. Now people know the importance of the English language and with the changing time they also start mastering in English language. If you want to share your knowledge or gain knowledge you must be capable enough to communicate. English language does this. English worked as the bridge among the people. Now it is accepted as the one of the important languages but it was the time when English was not known to all. As above said English is very much important and known as the window to the world. Here the metaphor of the ‘window’ is central in this structure, in which Indian languages are the ‘walls’ that, lets in the ‘light’ of reason and modernization. As we know that we are not the native of the English language we start our own English with the Indian grammar but it so happened that we are little expert in this language. The standers of English, the success in teaching English, have always fallen short of the ideal or even the minimum, and we know how several education commissions and committees went into the question of declining standers in English and made series of recommendations pertaining to syllabi, curriculum, weightage, teacher-training, methodology, learning-teaching theories, and what you have. But now days it is trend to call the foreign speakers. To know more about the English language and by this it opened up our views. In the education system we find that all most all the institutes frequently goes on inviting the foreign speakers. It is true that it has improved our ability and knowledge of the English language. We can convey our message through symbols also but still there is the need of this language to learn. It is expected from the first year students of B.Sc. or B.Tech course must know the basic level of the English language, because they have passed their all the exams in the English language and reaches to the intelligence and attainment above the average. He has successfully completed some courses in General English and has acquired Communicative Competence in English to a not inconsiderable extent. His English, however, requires remedial work and further improvement. He is possessed of adolescent psychology characterized by awakening ego, widening mental horizon, and desire to gain distinction in some areas. He is more eager to know things and ready to accept the challenges rather than viewing the pictures and language-games and mechanical learning, he wants to learn with understanding the things. It is important to note that at this stage curiosity and challenges act as stronger motivations than the
desire to enjoy, or play or see attractive objects.

English in India is a potential national resource. It is important to develop tolerance and positive attitudes towards English. Practical approaches can be adopted in the areas of its teaching by making it more need based, flexible and innovative. Our national freedom fighters established English language during the after freedom struggle, and this language rooted. The intention was not for mutual communication and coexistence but also for saving the republic from small state nationalism. It established its roots in our country as a language of national resurgence, political awakening, and cultural unification, and happily, continues to grow as such in its own localized way.

We have to change our attitude towards the English language. To do this we must have to forget that this language is connected with U.K or U.S.A. So learning another language makes one bigger, gives one a wider vision, and makes one aware of the subtleties that we don’t get in one language. If we teach English as a means of communication, we should also understand the essence of communication is meaningful interaction between participants, be it in the context of speaking, listening, writing or reading. While we are teaching the English language to the students we have to give opportunities to use language in intelligent and relevant interaction; they deserve an opportunity to think, to provide information from their world of knowledge, to express their personal opinions and to disagree with other people’s, to choose among equally valid alternatives etc. The other objective relates to motivating the students to experience success, to make them believe it is possible. The negative feelings of futility of learning or teaching English have to be changed.
Teaching the language is not an easy task. For that one must be the master of the language. Every learner is born with a built-in language-learning mechanism. And teacher should also respect this built-in language-learning skill of the students. The teacher should work on the practical tasks rather than giving the bookish knowledge.

Conclusion:
Learning and teaching is the two way process. In this process one gives something and other receives. Here encoding and decoding play a vital role and English, the much loved and hated surrogate child of the British rule in India, has managed to remain in the center-stage of controversy even after 47 years of the country's independence. To an impartial observer, it seems that it can neither be thrown away nor can it be adopted completely. It notes that the language-question is the most complicated problem that the country has faced since independence and one that has resisted a solution. It goes on to add that on account of educational, cultural and political reasons and the problem needs to be satisfactorily and urgently resolved.
